In short
- West Byfleet grew mainly between the wars, with semis and detached houses that suit silicone or monocouche.
- Larger detached homes towards Pyrford often call for premium silicone systems and careful detailing.
- Byfleet sits beside the River Wey and the Wey Navigation, so check ground levels against the damp-proof course.
- Woking Borough Council currently handles planning for both villages.
West Byfleet and Pyrford
West Byfleet grew around its station in the early twentieth century, and much of the village and the roads around it date from between the wars. Typical houses are cavity-walled semis and detached homes, often with pebbledash or painted render to the upper floor. These are well suited to silicone or monocouche, often rendered over sound pebbledash. See rendering over pebbledash.
Towards Pyrford the houses get larger, with many detached homes on generous plots. Here the finish matters as much as the protection: straight arrises, consistent colour across big elevations and clean junctions with glazing. See render finishes explained.
Byfleet
Byfleet is the older village, beside the River Wey and the Wey Navigation, with a mix of period cottages, interwar homes and later estates. Period cottages need breathable treatment; see lime render. On lower ground near the river, make sure render stops on a base bead at least 150 mm above ground and does not bridge the damp-proof course. See render and damp.
Sheerwater
Sheerwater, between West Byfleet and Woking, was built as a post-war estate and is being regenerated with new homes. Existing post-war houses there can benefit from external wall insulation where the construction suits it.
Planning
Woking Borough Council currently handles planning here. Surrey's district and borough councils are being replaced by new unitary councils, so check which authority handles planning when you apply. Rendering brick for the first time in a conservation area needs planning permission. See planning permission for rendering.
