Guildford Render

Spray render in Guildford and Surrey

Most modern through-coloured render on Surrey houses is now applied by machine. Spraying is faster and more even than hand application. The products are the same; what changes is speed, consistency and how much masking the job needs.

Before and after: what rendering can do

Six before-and-after pairs of Surrey-style houses: a pebbledashed 1930s semi re-rendered in cream, a pebbledashed detached house in light grey, a Victorian brick terrace rendered white, a bungalow in soft sage, a stained detached house in stone, and a cracked semi re-rendered in white

In short

  • Spray render is not a separate product. It is a way of applying monocouche, silicone or acrylic render with a render pump or hopper gun instead of a trowel.
  • Spraying puts on an even thickness quickly, which helps colour consistency across a large elevation.
  • Published 2026 UK ranges are the same as the product being sprayed: about £55–£90 per m² for monocouche and £60–£120 for silicone, plus scaffolding.
  • Windows, doors, paths and neighbouring walls must be thoroughly masked. Overspray is the most common complaint on poorly run spray jobs.

What spray rendering actually means

When people search for spray render they usually mean a modern, through-coloured render that a crew puts on with a machine. There are two main types of kit:

  • Render pumps, which mix powdered one-coat render such as monocouche with water and pump it through a hose to a spray nozzle. These are used for thick-coat systems like K-Rend scraped finishes and weber.pral M.
  • Hopper guns and airless sprayers, which apply ready-mixed thin-coat finishes such as silicone and acrylic over a meshed base coat.

In both cases the render is still levelled, floated or scraped by hand once it is on the wall. The machine replaces the slow part, getting material onto the wall evenly, not the skill of finishing it.

Spray or hand-applied?

Spray appliedHand applied
SpeedFast on large, open elevationsSlower
Thickness consistencyVery evenDepends on the crew
Colour consistencyGood across large areasMore risk of patchiness

Small or fiddly areasLess efficientOften better
Price per m²Similar; labour saving offsets kit and maskingSimilar

On a typical Guildford semi or detached house, spraying the main elevations and hand-finishing the reveals, bays and small returns is common. On a small extension or a few patches, hand application usually makes more sense.

Which renders can be sprayed

Lime render is traditionally hand-applied in several coats and is rarely sprayed on domestic work. See lime render.

What spray render costs in 2026

Spraying does not change the material cost. It mostly shifts labour time from application to preparation and masking. Expect quotes in line with the product being sprayed:

SystemTypical 2026 installed range
Monocouche or one-coat scraped render, sprayed£55–£90 per m²
Silicone thin-coat, sprayed finish£60–£120 per m²
Scaffolding, two-storey semi£800–£2,500

These are published market ranges, not quotations. Guildford and the wider South East usually sit in the upper half. Our rendering cost guide has whole-house examples.

Masking and overspray

Good spray crews spend a surprising amount of time masking. Windows, doors, frames, roof edges, gutters, downpipes, paths, cars and plants all need covering, and so do neighbouring walls on semis and terraces. Before we start, we agree with you:

  • what we mask and with what;
  • how we protect a neighbour's property on a shared elevation;
  • our wind limit for spraying, and what happens on windy days;
  • how any overspray is cleaned up.

See party walls and neighbour access if your wall is close to the boundary.

Weather limits still apply

A machine does not make render cure faster. The same limits on temperature, rain, frost and strong sun apply to sprayed render as to hand-applied render. In Surrey the most reliable months are late April to September. See the best time of year to render.

Questions people ask

Is spray render better than hand-applied render?

Not inherently. It is the same product applied by machine. Spraying gives an even thickness and colour across large walls quickly; hand application suits small or detailed areas. A good crew often uses both on one house.

Is spray render cheaper?

Usually about the same per m². Spraying saves application time but adds masking time and equipment cost. Preparation and scaffolding drive the total more than the application method.

Can K-Rend be sprayed?

Yes. K-Rend and Weber one-coat renders are commonly applied with a render pump, then scraped back by hand to the finished texture.

How long does a spray render job take?

A typical three-bed semi is often one to two weeks on site, depending on preparation, curing times between coats and the weather. See how long rendering takes.
